March 2010 will see the launch of the new Edale ‘Alpha Multi’, designed and manufactured in house at Edale. The Alpha Multi has all the benefits of the renowned Alpha yet can print up to 9-colours in a footprint of just 5 square metres. The Alpha Multi can be purchased as an upgrade to an original Alpha or as a brand new stand alone press. NYSCAN - New In-Line Spectral Color Measurement

NYSCAN now has a fully featured on press Photo-Spectrometer to add to its extensive list of features. This high specification unit sits alongside the 100% inspection system and provides color density readings to ISO 5-3/4.

Some of the specific technical advantages among the scanners list are as follows:

A measuring speed 3000 measurements per second

A Spectral range from 400 nm to 700 nm

Density standards DIN 16536, ISO / ANSI T, ISO/ANSI I, Dmax.

Density Range of 0.0 – 2.5 D and a repeatability of +/- 0.01 D

The scanner produces L* a* b*, and CMYK data simultaneously while the press is running at full speed, and is fully integrated into the NYSCAN Web:Inspector system.

All colour values are recorded throughout the entire production and they are therefore displayed in the Roll Map and reported via the NYSCAN print report manager.

This is a press dedicated unit designed to maintain optimum accuracy with minimum of calibration requirements.

As previously announced in the past months, from the 14th of July 2009 Nuova GIDUE S.r.l. is officially allowed to use the name, the know-how, the technology, the logo and to employ part of the workforce of former GIDUE S.p.A., a manufacturer of printing and converting machines for the label and packaging industries.

The GIDUE logo will be the official logo of Nuova GIDUE, and the product lines keep the former commercial names: QUADRA, a very compact 4 colours flexographic label press, COMBAT, a full range of flexographic presses for the production of labels, shrinkable sleeves, aluminium foil, PE-PP-PET etc. flexible packaging, tooth paste tubes, and XPANND, a multiplatform-combination press Offset-Flexo-Screen etc. for the production of high added value labels and packaging.

Nilpeter launches new UV-Flexo and InkJet technology at LabelExpo Americas 2008

Nilpeter closed the latest LabelExpo Americas, held recently in Chicago, in an upbeat mode. Global inflation may be a major threat to the world economy, but overall growth for the global label industry remains fairly buoyant in most market sectors. Reflecting this, Sales Director Jakob Landberg said, 'Despite the current financial problems, we experienced a positive atmosphere and had an extremely successful show with orders firmed up for 26 machines across all lines'.

Nilpeter's exhibition highlights included:

* The successful introduction of the FG-Line of flexo combination presses.
* The North American debut of CASLON, a full-colour InkJet and flexo printing platform.
* New print units for the FB-3300 UV-flexo labels and packaging press.

• The new FG-Line is a mid-range press positioned between the FA-Line and the high-performance FB-Line. 'G' stands for 'Global', which means it incorporates features designed to give converters a competitive advantage anywhere in the world. For example, each of the print units incorporate dual servo drives and incorporate the latest lightweight sleeve-plate technology. The maximum web width is 13.75 inches. Manufacturing is split between Nilpeter's plants in Denmark and the USA. The show version ran with eight UV-flexo units producing film and paper self-adhesive.

• The CASLON platform combines drop-on-demand InkJet printing with one or more flexo printing/coating units and rotary die cutting. It uses Xaar's 1001 drop-on-demand print heads for printing UV-curable CMYK ink sets for labels and packaging. The front-end, developed by FFEI, allows users to print variable data printing on the fly, or print single copies of full-colour labels on practically any material to a maximum resolution of 720 x 360 dpi. CASLON offers eight greyscale levels. It achieves a top speed of 25.3 m/min. (82 feet/min.) at a 360 x 360 dpi resolution and 8 grey scales. The show version ran with two FA-4 units handling a maximum web width of 420 mm (16.5 inches). One applied a UV-cured varnish, while the other applied an opaque white background for clear-on-clear film labelling.

• An eight-colour FB-3300 in the FB-Line series of modular UV-flexo presses was demonstrated. It boasts a redesigned print unit that gives faster adjustments and rapid anilox roll changes. Servo-driven FB-presses have a maximum web width of 420 mm (16.5 inches) and produce PSAs and flexible packaging at a top speed of 228 m/min. (750 ft/min.). The integral UV-curing lamp units are fitted with integral water-cooled chill rollers to assist the converting of heat-sensitive materials. Options include screen process and hot foil modules.

• Although not shown, Nilpeter received strong interest for its latest MO-4 offset-based platform press. It is designed for both long and short runs of premium-quality products, using freely configurable offset, flexo, rotary screen or gravure print units. Offset blanket sleeves and flexo plate sleeves are now incorporated.

Speedmaster XL 105 With Perfecting Device Delivers Impressive Performance in a Single Pass

Industrial print shops looking to offer their customers top quality and quick delivery achieve this through high-performance presses such as the new Speedmaster XL 105 with perfecting device from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). This Peak Performance Class press is now in use at a number of pioneering print shops around the world and is setting new standards in terms of productivity and cost efficiency in perfecting mode.

"This press enables us to boost productivity by ten million sheets per year," report Christian and Stefan Aumüller, owners of Aumüller Druck in Regensburg. This commercial print shop has a workforce of hundred and, following a comprehensive field test, installed not one but four Speedmaster XL 105 perfecting presses in its pressroom. "The excellent productivity and flexibility of these presses cuts production costs and enables us to offer competitive prices," the two owners add. The Speedmaster XL 105 with perfecting device is an integrated end-to-end system that processes substrate thicknesses of between 0.03 and 0.60 millimeters (between 0.0012 and 0.024 inches) at a speed of 15,000 sheets per hour.

The Franz Kuthal print shop in Mainaschaff has also converted its entire pressroom to Speedmaster XL 105 technology from Heidelberg. It operates a total of 29 printing units in this series, including a ten-color perfecting press. "This press produces top-quality sheets printed in five colors on both sides in a single pass," confirm print shop owners Helmut Kraft and Stefan Glaab. Kuthal has a workforce of 320 (including staff from RMD) and a product portfolio that includes high-quality prospectuses, product brochures, and annual reports. The Speedmaster XL 105-P boasts fully automatic three-drum perfecting technology with variable transfer cylinder and eccentric reversing drum. This is further enhanced by high-precision and ultra-smooth sheet travel. The innovative, variable AirTransfer system and exchangeable shells for the impression and transfer cylinders ensure that perfected sheets are guided mark-free through the press.

DS Graphics in Lowell, Massachusetts, recently started production with the first Speedmaster XL 105-P in the U.S. This ten-color press incorporates Prinect Inpress Control for color and register control on the fly and is already achieving a throughput of more than one million sheets per week. "We are keen to offer our customers higher quality and shorter delivery times," explains Jack McGrath, Vice President Sales & Marketing at DS Graphics. "Production in a single pass and the reduction in paper waste achieved by the high level of automation also help make our printing operations more sustainable," adds McGrath, who is an advocate of green printing. A workforce of over 180 produces commercial products for industry and offers a range of services based on a complete solution from Heidelberg that includes the Suprasetter 105, other Speedmaster presses, Stahlfolder folders, and a Polar cutter.

Sustainability was one of the key criteria for Rolf Ottesen AS Grafisk Produksjon in Oslo. This print shop will take delivery of Norway’s first Speedmaster XL 105 with perfecting device early this year and intends to continue the policy adopted for its two existing Speedmaster CD 102 four-color presses by operating the eight-color press using alcohol-free production methods. The new press is equipped with Prinect Inpress Control for quick makeready and a minimum of paper waste. The print shop is also investing in a Stahlfolder KH 82 with automated cross-fold unit - another innovation unveiled at drupa 2008. The company is relocating to a new production hall to allow the Ottesen print shop and the Joker Grafisk AS print shop to combine their production operations. Both companies use the Prinect workflow. The Speedmaster XL 105-P will be supplied complete with Prinect Pressroom Manager, and all equipment in the new hall will be connected to the Prinect Integration System. "Thanks to the largest investment in our company’s history, we are very well placed for the future," states owner Per Ottesen.

The Speedmaster SM 102 with perfecting device has dominated the 70 x 100 centimeter (27.56 x 39.37 inch) format long perfector market for many years. More than 1,500 presses with eight or more printing units have been installed worldwide. With the Speedmaster XL 105-P, Heidelberg is expanding its product range in this format, appealing to customers who value maximum productivity and cost efficiency.

National Labels of Pennsylvania, USA, takes over its first MO-4 in Nilpeter A/S, Denmark

Martin Automatic to exhibit at India Label Show

GIDUE latest combined offset/flexo press Xpannd 450, will be presented during the next GIDUE Open House on the 27th and 28th of November. The wider width of the press, 450mm, is convenient for printing both self-adhesive and shrinkable sleeves and makes offset/flexo combination a valuable choice for a larger number of converters.

The offset/flexo Xpannd 450 is a viable solution for label converters who want to increase profitability during the actual market slowdown. The Labelmakers Group Commissions the First Alprinta 74V in Australia

The Labelmakers Group, leading Australian label producers with head office in Somerton in the state of Victoria, invested as first printing house on the fifth continent in an Alprinta 74V web offset printing press.

Managing Director of Labelmakers, Paul O'Sullivan, declined to comment on what exactly the Alprinta 74V would be producing. However he told, “that the new printing press from Muller Martini is very significant for our market.”

Livio Barbagallo, Managing Director of Muller Martini Australia, is pleased with the conclusion of the sale: “This is a fantastic success for us, to sell a press like this in the labeling market. It's important for us to have a great partner such as Labelmakers as reference.” The new Alprinta 74V will be installed next February and ready for production around six weeks later.

At the upcoming “India Label Show” (ILS) in December in New Delhi, Nilpeter A/S and Proteck Machinery Ltd. will take advantage of the promotion opportunities at hand, and introduce the newly formed Joint Venture Company, named Nilpeter India Pvt. Ltd.

“Over the past two years Nilpeter has watched the Indian label market grow intensively. In 2007 we started our cooperation with Proteck Machinery as our agent for sales and service in India and quickly found that we share the same set of company values”, Nilpeter's Sales & Marketing Director, Mr. Jakob Landberg states.

The Nilpeter India Team

Flexotecnica are proud to announce their success in the 2008 FlexoTech Awards as winner of the award for “Innovation in Printing Press/Finishing”. The annual event was held in London on Wednesday 15th October at the spectacular Hilton Metropole Hotel

Flexotecnica entered their new “F12”, 12 colour CI flexopress which was recently launched at Drupa 2008. The F12 beat off stiff competition from around the Flexo industry and fellow finalists from Omet Srl and Apex Europe Bv and the award was presented to Maria Costantino, Marketing Manager by England’s Rugby Union World Cup Winner, Matt Dawson. The event was attended by over 500 printers and suppliers from all corners of the European community, print quality was celebrated by entries on film, paper and board from narrow to wide web substrates. The F12, the world’s first 12 colour wide web CI flexopress, incorporates numerous important innovations to optimise flexopress productivity and efficiency.Twelve colours around a single CI means infinite combinations of colours, special primer coatings, special motives with sophisticated graphic artwork and the demand of a finish over-lacquer can all be achieved on the F12 without jeopardizing the production speeds.To ensure utmost flexibility in utilizing 12 print units combined with a drastic reduction of the press downtime, the F12 incorporates the SSC® system (Safe Sleeve Change) developed by Flexotecnica that incorporates individual unit shutter guards to cover the CI and individual unit entry guards to allow the make-ready of idle print units whilst the remainder are in print in the safest and most practical way.Another new feature, “WiPC – Wireless Press Control” utilizes advanced WiFi technology and readily available PDA handsets that allows operators to conveniently control press speeds, substrate tensions, dryer temperatures, impression and register settings and many more from any position around the machine. .The design of the print deck is further enhanced by a new “Pipeless” doctor chamber design that removes all ink piping from the operating area to outside the machines substantial side frames.The F12 can be viewed at Flexotecnica’s production headquarters in Tavazzano, Lodi where the machine was demonstrated on 29th, 30th and 31st October during a Open House printing with one 6 colour job whilst preparing the next 6 colour job, highlighting its productivity to numerous clients coming from different foreign countries interested in this award winning machine.

Multifilm Packaging Chooses 8-color PRIMAFLEX Press to Increase Productivity and Expand in New Markets

Multifilm Packaging's intention to invest in their printing department
had been in discussion for some time. They recently decided on a 52” 8-color PRIMAFLEX CM flexographic press, based on W&H's reputation as the market leader in advanced technology,
reliability of the equipment and positive feedback from other W&H customers that Multifilm visited, confirming that the machine performed even better than promised.

“Historically, our business has been long runs, 3 to 4 colors, and simple print designs,” says
Chris Rogers, Vice President of Sales. “As we have grown into other areas, we have seen more
of our business shift into shorter runs, more colors, and more complex print designs with screens
and process printing. We needed a printing press that could dramatically improve our productivity
on all our current business and provide the opportunity to expand in our newer markets by offering
8 color printing.”

Multifilm Packaging, located in Elgin, IL, is a vertically integrated flexible packaging converter, with
in-house cast extrusion, metallizing, flexographic printing, adhesive laminating, and slitting. Primary markets are confectionary twist wraps and bag film, and high barrier laminates for dry foods. The
press is scheduled to be installed towards the end of 2008.
