OMET strengthens its position in Central America

Italian press manufacturer, Omet, has concluded a sale with one of Central America’s leading producers of printed packaging, Polymer , based in Costa Rica. The Omet VaryFlex-F1 press, which is due for installation at the end of the year, is a 9-colour flexo line fitted with inline solvent lamination. This is significantly more efficient than laminating offline because it reduces overall set up times and increases throughput. In addition, waste levels of adhesive and substrate are reduced, and there is a lower demand for energy and labour. Established 65 years ago, Polymer has five plants located across Central America and manufactures a range of approximately 3,000 plastic packaging items for the industrial, consumer and agricultural sectors. As market leader in plastic packaging in Central America and the Caribbean, Polymer attaches great importance to innovation, and chose Omet for the synergy between the two companies. Speaking for Omet, Sales Director Marco Calcagni commented:

Hot filling: the world's lightest bottles

Its esthetics combined with technical prowess. A long silhouette with cylindrical and square shapes, an elegant belt and just four panels: that's Skyward™. There's also Curvy™ with its curves, spirals and a twisted back that serves as a support beam, without panels. These two small 0.5-L bottles have undergone a revolution: they weigh only 18.9 g and their design is a real breakthrough for the shape of hot-fill bottles, which traditionally have six or eight panels and often look exactly like each other. Sidel has just developed innovative technical solutions that extend the limits of lightweighting for heat-set packaging. Bottle lightweighting has been made possible by complete redesign of the neck, body and base, conducted by the Sidel Packaging & Tooling Center. The 28-mm amorphous (non-crystallized) neck has been made lighter, and it accepts a standard cap for carbonated soft drinks. The base has also been revised, making it stiffer while also using fewer raw materia
