US label demand to reach $19 billion in 2017

Label demand in the US is projected to reach $19 billion in 2017, with growth accelerating from the 2007-2012 performance based on a strengthened economy. The pressure sensitive segment will remain dominant, accounting for more than 75 percent of the total market. Although pressure sensitive labels will expand at a healthy rate, they will continue to face growing competition from alternative labeling methods for primary packaging, such as stretch sleeve and heat-shrink, and in-mold labels. Among these, heatshrink labels will experience the fastest growth through 2017, with gains attributable to their ability to form-fit contoured containers and their strong visual appeal afforded by 360-degree graphics and maximum promotional area. Plastic label stock to continue supplanting paper While paper will continue to account for the majority of label stock through 2017, plastics will continue to expand their share at paper’s expense. The growing use of plastic materials is based on the aes

Overall, North America now represents just 21% of world label demand – a reflection of the continuing dynamism of the Asia Pacific region, which now commands a 36% share of the global label market.   Today and tomorrow The study goes on to show that, while once again pressure-sensitive labeling leads in North America, with 49% of demand, it was sleeve labels that grew fastest in 2012 [A1] . Indeed, in the medium term, the North American Label Market Study 2013 predicts , it will be sleeving – shrink and

Royston Labels Adds New Adhesive Technology for Condensation-Coated Bottles

Leading self-adhesive label manufacturer Royston Labels has added a new adhesive to its range of labelling technologies. With it, Royston can deliver solutions which enable wine and champagne brands to avoid the inefficient and costly processes usually required to prevent condensation during labelling. The innovative new adhesive was developed through close work with wine brand owners to understand bottling environments, and therefore presents an effective solution to the challenges they face. Surface condensation forms when beverages are bottled at a low temperature, between 1 and 4 degrees centigrade, which leads to a weakened bond between label and bottle. This can cause labels to slip on the production line, as well as inconsistent label positioning. Both factors result in higher scrap rates. The adhesive technology has been engineered to actively absorb surface water, and removes the need to bring bottles up to room temperature. It supports in-line processing (even the exit

ImageTek Labels Announces Recent Purchase of LVS7500® Verification System

ImageTek Labels, a Vermont based label systems developer and label converter in Springfield, VT, introduces the newest addition to their group of label converting equipment. ImageTek purchased an LVS7500®, a bar code validation system manufactured by Label Vision Systems in early July. The LVS® 7500 will allow them to validate bar code labels for readability and will then grade each label per international standards. By inspecting any combination of 1D and 2D codes, an inspector can easily detect non-conforming labels, see trends on quality and assure ISO standards are met. The system has the ability to scan hundreds of labels a minute, and notifies the inspector through visible error warning indicators and alarms. ImageTek Labels is pleased to have this technology available. With their continued growth in military and government sectors, this system was a must. Most often, UID and other barcode labels must not only meet ANSI or ISO standards but must also be verified and graded. O

New Pressure Sensitive Adhesive – Novamelt® PS 2030

The labeling of food stuffs at refrigerated temperatures presents a challenge for any packager or label printer. Most often, the labeling occurs in the packaging line of cheeses and meats. The label is usually applied on various poly films at 0 to 5°C (32 – 40° F) in damp environments. The label is either rolled on or blown on with leading edge label blowing equipment.   A high initial tack from the adhesive is required that in effect “blankets” the label onto the poly substrate. Even when the substrate surface is uneven, the label must adhere to the package so that no edges of the label stick up.   Novamelt has successfully developed the new PS 2030 hot melt PSA adhesive, which improves upon the existing “semi-freezer” application adhesives, and has again proven its strong position in this segment. With this adhesive, fast and secure labeling with the newest technology blow labeling equipment is assured. In addition, the penetration of the new PS 2030 into paper face stocks is
