Quality Standard from sample to full Production

CPC Haferkamp in Norden, Germany, installs ten colour full rotary offset combination machine from the product line MO-4 of Nilpeter. The coast area around the East Frisian city Norden in Germany is primarily characterized by landscape and tourism. The fact that the print shop CPC Haferkamp is producing for multinational branded article companies exactly here, in this rather contemplative surrounding of the most north western city on the German mainland, may be surprising for people outside this industry. For insiders the company development due to the membership of the French CPC Group is just as logical as the installation of a modern ten colour roll printing machine end of September 2009. This article highlights the motivations for the investment decision and tells about the first practical experience. In the world of the multinational branded article companies issues like promptitude, product variety and safety play an important roll, in order to get into the act in the front ro

Nilpeter MO-4 puts the icing on the cake

This summer, Grafiche Federighi installed a Nilpeter MO-4 offset-based platform press. Within just a few weeks it was producing labels for premium-quality wines for export at its plant in Camerata Picena, some 14 km southwest of Ancona. Following the completion of a planned upgrade in early October, the company decided it was time to properly celebrate the successful commissioning of its latest arrival with a staff party. The machine was expanded with a flatbed hot foil and embossing unit from Pantec, enabling very high quality embellishments on even short runs. The decoration for the fine cake, that went with the celebration, was not printed on the new MO-4, but the company is confident that a combination of fast job changeovers with benchmark print quality, will help maintain its competitive edge in the Italian wine and spirits sector. Technical Note The fourth-generation MO-4 is an offset-based combination press with a maximum web width of 420 mm (16½ inches). The flexible

The PET bottle with a deep blowmolded grip

Ideal for water and oil, the DeepGrip™ large-format PET bottle has a deep grip that makes it easier to use. With no external handle, this grip is blow-molded using the punching-conforming technology. Elegant and triangular in shape, the three-liter DeepGrip is the first PET bottle with a deep blow-molded grip, requiring no external handle. It is produced using Sidel’s punching-conforming technology (patent pending). Developed in partnership with PTI-Europe, this technology makes it possible to manufacture single-material packages in large, functional formats: it includes a deep grip to give consumers an ergonomic handle, making it ideal for the bottling of water or oil. A single-material package Trying to make bottles with deep grips using traditional blow molding technologies has a number of technical limitations. For example, to be deep enough, the grip has to be outside the inscribed diameter of the preform. This requires offsetting the grip area and increases blow moldin

FreeShape™ liberates bottle shapes for sensitive beverages

Sidel is launching FreeShape™, the first PET bottle that can be used for the packaging of sensitive beverages aseptically or by hot fill with a single shape. How? It’s all thanks to the overstroke base technology. Hot fill or aseptic? Bottle shape constraints related to the choice of filling technology are no longer a consideration with FreeShape™. This innovative bottle needs no panels due to its overstroke base, and in addition to shape freedom, it also offers the possibility of using a single bottle for both types of filling. This development is based on an in-depth knowledge of material characteristics, aseptic packaging, hot filling and blow molding technologies. A membrane base The secret of FreeShape™ lies in its patented bottle base profile, which acts like a membrane or piston: it rises and falls depending on variations in the volume contained within the bottle. This innovative solution responds to the packaging needs of sensitive products such as juices or teas fill

SmartWeight™ bottle: Lightness combined with quality

This PET bottle for still water offers the best in user comfort for an ultra-lightweight package – less than 10g for a 500-ml bottle – thanks to its reinforced foundation using the overstroke base technology. Lighter, yes, but not at just any price. On supermarket shelves, ultra-lightweight water bottles increasingly suffer from deformations of their base, which alters not only package appearance but also stability. Sidel has found a solution for this issue: SmartWeight™, a lightweight 500-ml PET water bottle weighing less than 10 g, with a much stiffer base that ensures better mechanical performance and appearance. Due to the overstroke base technology, these benefits open the door for the lightweighting of premium water bottles. Stiff base for ultra-lightweight bottles The overstroke base technology consists in synchronizing the blow molding process with the rise of the bases. It increases the lengthwise stretching rate of the PET preform. It therefore helps to decrease th

SafeSense™ HDPE bottle made by ISBM by Sidel

Lighter than an extruded HDPE bottle for the same level of functionality, the SafeSense™ HDPE bottle made by ISBM also offers equivalent capping quality to PET, without a sealing lid. This is a real alternative for the fresh milk market . Keeping the same material and the same recycling circuits, while changing only the bottle manufacturing technology: these are the opportunities offered by the conversion to ISBM-type (injectionstretching-blow molding) HDPE (high-density polyethylene) for dairy producers who already use EBM-type (extrusion-blow molding) HDPE to package their products. This leads to economic and environmental benefits as well as new industrial opportunities in terms of output rates and complete line bottling solutions, such as the Combi. 20% lighter Producing an HDPE bottle with ISBM technology enables much better thickness control than with EBM. The use of a preform instead of a parison also helps keep bottle weight constant. Thanks to precise control of the
