Food producers increasingly prefer plastic packaging

PET packaging convinces through its unbreakability, high transparency and low weight. An increasing number of renowned companies are deciding to change over from glass to plastics.

Factors, such as higher product safety combined with innovative design, the availability of raw materials and logistical aspects are causing this development to catch on fast. Günter Ausserwöger, Head of Division Kavo at Greiner Packaging, underlines: “Greiner Packaging has long-lasting know-how with the processing of versatile plastics for food packaging and is best prepared to face this trend. Kremsmünster, 4 May 2009. – The growing trend toward plastics can be seen in many branches – from the dairy-processing industry to spices or jam producers. There are numerous arguments to support the trend toward plastic packaging.

PET has many pros
PET has a particularly wide field of application. Besides its visual benefits, packaging solutions made from this plastic material distinguish themselves, as the material is unbreakable. In addition, the products can be stacked and due to its low weight, they offer economically valuable logistical benefits. The ecological advantages with PET packaging include the more favourable transportation conditions and noise reduction during the filling process. The strengths in terms of environmental consciousness also benefit the end consumer, for whom good recyclability is a particularly important detail.

Transparent and dyeable
The consumer knows PET from drinking bottles. In addition, PET offers versatile forms of application which make it possible to pack other everyday foodstuffs innovatively and functionally. The material stands out through its excellent transparency which allows the customer to view the product. Modular tooling concepts and different dyeing variants provide for a wide range of shapes and designs.
