AVERY DENNISON PILOTS MAJOR RECYCLING INITIATIVE FOR PET RELEASE LINER

A major recycling initiative in Europe for PET release liner is entering its pilot stage, courtesy of Avery Dennison, who will collect used liner from the premises of label converters' end-user customers.
The scheme is part of the company's ongoing commitment to reduce waste throughout the self-adhesive industry's value chain. PET release liner from self-adhesive labelstock can be easily recycled via industrial processes, has excellent 'second market' possibilities, and can make a significant contribution to environmental sustainability.

The label industry's favourite film liner
Today, PET liner commands around 80% of total European demand for film release liner, and a fast-growing share of the total European release liner market. It delivers high performance in label dispensing, eliminating time- and cost-consuming web breaks. On press, it gives crisp diecutting. PET liner is the first choice for 'no label look' labels because of its smooth surface and excellent adhesive 'wet-out'.
Supply chain collaboration
The Avery Dennison PET liner recycling scheme — initially to be rolled out in the Benelux, France, Germany, and the UK — is an extension of the
company's existing partnership with label converter customers. It centres round collections of PET liner waste from end users' premises.

No cost to end users
There is no cost at all to end users for participating in the Avery Dennison programme, which can make significant time and cost savings in waste management for brand owners and major retailers. Avery Dennison will collect all end users' waste PET liner for recycling via their scheme, provided some Fasson liner is included.

Simple operation
End users' only responsibility is to separate PET liner from other waste, and bag it up in industrial 'big bags' for collection by Avery Dennison transport. It will then be delivered to a reprocessor for re-granulation as rPET. The regenerated raw material is then sold on the open market. Popular current uses for rPET are in the manufacture of fleece clothing, fashion handbags, street furniture, disposable cups, and coat hangers.

Just one contact point
Eelko Leeuwenburg, services marketing manager for Avery Dennison Roll Materials Europe, summarises the modus operandi. 'All our converter partners and their end-user participants will be provided with an instruction manual. Participants will just take one simple action to solve their whole PET liner recycling issue.
'We believe we are building a valuable service platform that will benefit both label users in terms of both cost and time savings in waste management, and environmental sustainability.'

Be part of this sustainability initiative
Avery Dennison will pilot this initiative in the selected countries till the end of 2009, and expect to launch it formally in January 2010, when it is expected
that additional countries will also be able to enjoy the benefits. Brand owners and label converters interested in taking part in the pilot scheme should contact Avery Dennison Roll Materials Europe sales representatives.
