Tampering protection for Hypercom health card readers

Oberschleissheim, March 11, 2010 – Data thieves employ various techniques to tamper with card readers. Hypercom, one of the world’s leading providers and innovators of electronic POS payment systems, is now using special security seals by Schreiner ProSecure to provide reliable protection for health card readers and the sensitive patient data they store.
Hypercom delivers an extensive range of high-secure payment and transaction system solutions. To protect Hypercom health card readers from tampering Schreiner ProSecure has developed a special security seal that meets the exacting requirements of the German Federal Agency for Security in Information Technology (BSI).
All of the readers set up in doctor’s offices are provided with tamper protection by means of the housing seal prior to initial use. Any attempt to detach the seal immediately destroys it and exposes a previously hidden pattern. The seal reliably indicates even the most careful use of solvents, heat or scalpels.
An embossed hologram or a security color-shifting ink offer additional protection against copying or counterfeiting the seal. In addition, a barcode personalizes each seal and enables definite documentation.
Thomas Völcker, Director, Marketing and Sales at Schreiner ProSecure, comments, “Data security and privacy protection are top priorities in the healthcare sector. Our seal, which Hypercom is now using after in-depth testing by the BSI, indicates even the slightest attempt to tamper with the card reader.”
Deliveries of the Hypercom readers equipped with Schreiner ProSecure’s tamper protection started in Germany at the end of 2009.
