Grom, the famous ice cream manufacturer well known for their in depth research into raw materials, is replacing all their traditional plastic with the Mater-Bi, the family of bioplastics, developed and sold by Novamont, naturally biodegradable and compostable in conformity to European Standards UNI EN 13432 and UNI EN 14995.
In particular, Grom has decided to adopt the new Mater-Bi biodegradable, compostable teaspoons in their stores, designed by Giulio Iacchetti, as well as bin bags and carrier bags that can be re-used for the separate collection of organic components of refuse.
The separate collection will be done in all of Grom’s stores with the option of disposing of cones,
teaspoons, tubs and napkins in the bins provided.
Tubs, cups, napkins and packaging are made of certified Forest Stewardship Council paper, originating from forests correctly and responsibly managed according to strict environmental, social and economic standards that respect the living conditions of the local population (the entire process of plastic replacement and the FSC certification are part of the Grom Loves World project).
The polyethylene that originally lined the inside of each tub has been replaced with Mater-Bi, thus making each Grom tub completely biodegradable and compostable.
In fact, the Mater-Bi ensures resistance and hold very similar to that of traditional plastics, but “biodegrades into compost” in just a few weeks. A concrete solution to the request for widespread consumer products with a low environmental impact that stems from renewable resources of agricultural origin and reduces the release of greenhouse gases as well as bringing down energy consumption and non-renewable resources, completes a virtuous circle: the raw materials of agricultural origin return to the ground via biodegrading or composting processes without releasing polluting substances.
“The collaboration with Grom is further proof that thanks to the choice of innovators, it is possible to put in place systems geared towards economic and environmental sustainability and the reduction of refuse, providing the general public with information and culture. Catia Bastioli, CEO of Novamont, pointed out that shopping bags represent one of the greatest risks of dispersion in the environment –
The adoption of Mater-Bi® biodegradable shopping bags can reduce the impact on the environment and encourage their re-use for the separate collection of the organic components of refuse, improving the quality of the compost. Furthermore, the citizen learns to appreciate the shopping bag and becomes more aware of protecting the environment”.
The collaboration between GROM and Novamont can also be found in other important areas: the agricultural company Mura-Mura, where Grom grows part of the fruit used in its products, will use Mater-Bi biodegradable mulching fabrics, for example, in the cultivation of melons.
