Turkish Zaman Newspaper achieves uniform quality across five production houses with KODAK GENERATION NEWS System

Kodak_Zaman After a year of comparative tests, Turkey-based Zaman Newspaper is set to optimize its prepress operation and achieve a uniform quality standard by implementing a raft of KODAK Technology. The company has invested in ten KODAK GENERATION NEWS Systems, along with KODAK NEWSMANAGER Page Pairer  Software, KODAK COLORFLOW Software with Ink Optimisation, and KODAK STACCATO Screening Technology with KODAK SQUARESPOT Thermal Imaging Technology. Zaman will install two  KODAK GENERATION NEWS Systems in each of its five print production houses. The installation will also help the company establish a centralized control and reporting system.

Zaman Newspaper and its parent company, Feza Publications Inc, were established in 1986 in Ankara, Turkey. Zaman quickly evolved into the most widely read and respected conservative newspaper in Turkey, with a daily circulation reaching nearly 900,000. Zaman has now become a trademark, with offices around the globe printing international editions in local languages in Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Germany, Romania, Kazakhstan, Kyrghizistan, Macedonia, Turkmenistan and the United States. News bureaus and representatives support the headquarters in Ashgabat, Baku, Brussels, Bucharest, Frankfurt, Jerusalem, Moscow, New York and Washington DC.

Zaman is renowned for its in-depth and objective news coverage. The organization has won numerous national and international awards, especially for its modern page layout and its contributions to inter-cultural relations through its international editions.

Thorough comparative testing delivers optimal quality

In 2009, Zaman wanted to switch from CTF to CTP, so it approached various suppliers in search of the optimal solution for its production plants. Zaman's Vice President of Production, Nevzat Güner, elaborates on the company’s thorough purchasing process: "Switching to CTP enables us to achieve optimal quality while at the same time reduce our costs. We knew we’d need easy-to-use, fast and flexible solutions, so we tested various products from six suppliers for around one year, comparing them in similar conditions. Our technical department then documented each solution's weaknesses and strengths."

The evaluation was based on four criteria: advanced technology, supply service procurement, representation in Turkey and investment cost. When the technical and financial results were evaluated, Kodak came out on top. Güner adds: "The tests showed clearly that the KODAK Solutions were best suited to our needs. We were especially impressed by the advantages of Thermal Imaging including the overall system stability, on top of the smooth implementation of KODAK - STACCATO Screening Technology in conjunction with SQUARESPOT Thermal Imaging Technology. It delivers the promised ink savings, and provides excellent colour and tone stability in presswork.

“I am confident the KODAK Technology will help us realise our goals and optimise our prepress operations. Plus, we have the peace of mind of being able to turn to Kodak’s local partner, Dereli Graphics, for fast and professional technical support."

An optimistic future with local and global support

Kodak’s partner in Turkey, Dereli Graphics, anticipates that the installation will have big impact at Zaman: "After discussing Zaman’s requirements with Mr Güner, it was clear the company was looking for the highest possible quality in newspaper printing,” says Ahmet Dereli, owner of Dereli Graphics. “We were convinced that the KODAK STACCATO Screening Technology would deliver just that. We’re thrilled to start equipping the five Zaman facilities with the KODAK Solutions and look forward to future co-operation."

Kodak's Sales Director for Central East & South Eastern Europe, Melis Michael, comments on the deal: "It has been an exciting year working with Dereli Graphics to ascertain how the KODAK Solutions could best meet Zaman's needs. By taking the time to really understand how the company operates and what it wants to achieve, we’ve been able to help optimize its production process and deliver cost-saving measures. It’s rewarding to know we’re contributing to the excellent quality of Turkey's largest newspaper."
