Xeikon's new dedicated toners receive thumbs-up from customers

Xeikon, a division of Punch Graphix and pioneer of the first digital colour presses, is proud to announce that its next generation QA toners are receiving strong support from its customers. This new generation QA toners comes in two types: the Industrial version (QA-I) for industrial printing and the Productivity version (QA-P) for document printing. This development reflects the company’s strategy to focus on two key markets. Each market has its own requirements and it's a logical step in the focussed approach, to create a market specific toner. Customers such as Ero-Etikett are already taking full advantage of the food-approved QA-I toner – eliminating the need for additional functional barriers. This unique feature, together with the toner’s vastly improved light fastness, is enabling printers to stand apart from their competitors and win new business.

“We specialise in the labelling market,” says Sabine Feifel, Managing Director of Ero-Etikett, a well respected German based printing company who invested in the Xeikon 3300 twelve months ago. “We agreed immediately when we were asked to act as test-site for the new QA-I toner in the beginning of the year, because it was developed specifically for our market. And we were very happy with the results. The previous toner already had a high degree of food approval which was one of the basics to choose for Xeikon. The  QA-I toner broadens the scope in direct dry food contact application. The vastly improved light fastness was also a key factor. Labels play a key role in delivering shelf impact and it’s important that they don’t fade and remain in perfect colour strength for their whole shelf life,  another important demand from this market.”

QA-I for Industrial printing, an industry first

Specifically developed for the packaging and labelling market, the QA-I toner boasts major advances in light fastness, food safety and ecological benefits. One of the secrets behind these advancements lies in the careful selection of new colour pigments. By optimising the toner pigments, the toner obtained FDA approval for direct dry food contact for all the standard CMYK process colours and an FDA approval for indirect food contact for all QA-I toners, inclusive the of-the-shelf available spot colours (orange, green, red, blue, extra magenta, clear and white). Dry toner, and thus QA-I, is truly unique in offering this food approval compared to other digital printing technologies, an approval that even stands when printing regular paper labels.

Committed to the environment

Dry toner digital printing is well known for its eco-friendliness compared to traditional offset technologies – no VOC emission, less energy and less waste. Xeikon is committed to a greener future and ecology plays a key role in the design of the end-to-end printing process: from toner production and packaging, through to actual printing and paper recycling.

In line with this philosophy, the QA-toners feature a new polyester resin system with an environmental friendly catalyst, which includes no organic tin compound. The dry toner technology used in the QA-toners is 100% compatible with the increasing demand for global reductions of VOC emissions, and existing deinking and recycling installations. Moreover, the QA toners are 100% backwards compatible with earlier versions of Xeikon printers – as in the case of Ero-Etikett – further extending the lifetime of engines in the field and reducing waste.
