AVERY DENNISON SPONSORS ‘BEST PRESENTED WINE’ AWARD

As a global leader in self-adhesive labelling -- one of today’s most popular and versatile solutions for wine labels --Avery Dennison partnered Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and the UK Vineyards Association (UKVA) in sponsoring the Montagu Trophy for the ‘Best Presented Wine’ at The English & Welsh Wine of the Year Competition 2010.    The UKVA is the only organisation recognised by the British government and the wider community as representing the English and Welsh wine industry.

The Montagu Trophy

The Montagu Trophy is an established feature of the annual competition, and acknowledges a key part of any wine producing business – that of labelling, packaging and presentation.   Avery Dennison, with graphic design consultancy Nightingale Austen -- specialists in wine branding -- and award-winning self-adhesive label printers AJS Labels, complemented the Trophy with additional prizes.

A professional package

The Trophy winner, and the second and third runners-up, will benefit from professional design advice, Fasson® self-adhesive wine labelling material, and expert print services that will enable them to create an optimal brand image for their wines.

‘We have apportioned the combination of self-adhesive materials, design consultancy, and print so that we actively encourage the runners-up to achieve greater things, while at the same time rewarding the worthy Trophy winner,’ said Glyn Scriven -- Sales Manager, Wines and Spirits, Avery Dennison Roll Materials Europe -- at the awards presentation held at The House of Lords on July 23 2010.

The best-presented wines

Ridgeview Blanc de Blancs
After much deliberation, the competition judges awarded the Montagu Trophy to the Ridgeview Wine Estate on the Sussex Downs for their Grosvenor 2001 Blanc de Blancs Magnums – not only for the quality of design in the label and foil, but also for the wine’s presentation in hand-crafted wooden boxes, adding to its prestige and reflecting the estate's identity.     Tamara Roberts, Ridgeview General Manager, comments:  ‘We were thrilled to be awarded the Montagu Trophy.   Not only was this the first Magnum we have ever released, but it was also dressed in our new range of labels designed by the excellent Linea Design.  The whole image of our wines is of great importance, and the impact of good labelling on the consumer should never be underestimated.  The fact that the award is now sponsored by Avery Dennison adds status, as they are a major player in the wine label market and the quality of their Fasson paper range, which is incorporated in our new labels, is second to none’.  The Ridgeview Wine Estate on the Sussex Downs used Fasson MP Silver with Fasson S2047 adhesive and BG45 release liner to label its award-winning bottles.
Hush Heath Vineyard was awarded second prize for its Balfour Brut Rosé 2006, and Wickham Vineyard third for its Wickham Limited Special Reserve Red 2008.

Wine is a lifestyle product

Glyn Scriven commented:  ‘Wine has become a lifestyle product chosen by consumers mainly from the supermarket shelves.   In such a competitive environment, the image of the bottle is everything.   In particular, the label’s image and message not only define the nature and personality of the wine inside the bottle, but are key to attracting the consumer to pick up the bottle in the first place.  Lord Montagu’s prestigious trophy recognises this fundamental truth, and encourages English and Welsh fine winemakers to market their products in packaging that SELLS.

‘We hope our sponsorship will contribute to a rising awareness of the importance of the role of the bottle label in making a wine stand out on the retail shelf,’ he added.

The sponsorship continues

Nightingale Austen Design, AJS Labels, and Avery Dennison have also committed to sponsoring the Montagu Trophy for the ‘Best Presented Wine’ in 2011.
