Thanks to seamless paper batch tracking maximum security for paper manufacturers and print service providers. Industrial digital printing forms the centrepiece of secure coding and serialising in printing bank notes, excise labels and security documents such as passports and driving licences.
Atlantic Zeiser Group, a leading developer and provider of modules and end-to-end system solutions for security printing, is advancing the development of new applications for its inkjet digital printer ranges. Thanks to high security requirements in bank note and security document printing, seamless quality control for paper manufacturers and suppliers and print service providers is becoming increasingly important. The cost-effective and rapid coding and serialising of paper batches with variable data and check codes are the key consideration here. To be able to provide evidence of the quality of each individual sheet, security paper manufacturers and print service providers are required to mark their products with variable data.
"Numerous conversations with experts during the key security printing conferences in 2010 have convinced us that cost-efficient high-speed marking and coding represent a significant challenge for public and private security printers, security paper manufacturers and print service providers. This is noticeably increasing demand”, reiterates Thorsten Tritschler, Vice President of Bank Note & Security Printing at Atlantic Zeiser. The company has taken on this challenge and in the shape of the DELTA™ 105i offers an innovative inkjet component for the high-speed printing of variable data. Integration into production machines such as winding machines or cross-cutters is a core competence at Atlantic Zeiser. These include special machine frames that can be integrated flexibly and easily. This combination both makes it easier for paper manufacturers and suppliers to track batches in the event of possible quality level deviations and assures public and private security printers of transparent quality management and sustainable quality assurance.
DELTA™ forms the centrepiece of seamless batch tracking
The example of the production process in processing security and bank note paper illustrates how the marking and coding works. Before the crosswise and lengthwise cutting process of the paper roll, the goods delivery is recorded via a barcode. The ERP system then assigns this batch a specific group of numbers and the consecutive numbers in this group are printed onto the paper web. The paper runs through the crosscutter at high speed. With the integration of a DELTA™ 105i inkjet printer on this transport unit, the webs can be printed with variable data on both sides. To be able to print on both sides of the paper web, a special machine frame for a mechanical reversing unit via rolls is included with the integration package from Atlantic Zeiser. The DELTA™ prints the edges of the paper roll at a maximum width of 105 mm before it is cut. At a maximum speed of up to 240 m/min, the digital printer prints check codes in plain text, barcodes and 2-D datamatrix codes onto the security paper. This data is obtained by the system directly from the ERP database via an interface. When a batch is marked in this way, it can be shipped and used to manufacture bank notes or security documents by print service providers.
The variable data printed onto the security paper represents the unique identification features for every sheet after delivery that is used to produce bank notes or security documents. These check codes contain important production information. If queries arise later on relating to the quality of the end product, the check code can be read and the paper batch traced throughout the entire supply chain. This ensures that any errors occurring can be quickly identified and rectified later on. This means optimised quality management for everyone involved. This check data can also be used for track & tracing purposes at subsequent additional production stages.
The printing of bank notes and tax labels as well as security documents brings together the requirement for maximum precision, quality and speed in the printing process. For document printing and secure marking in paper manufacturing, industrial digital printing now provides comparable offset quality and production speed. The digital inkjet printer DELTA™ 105i uses either UV inks or water-based inks for printing. The integration package includes a corresponding UV curing module from Atlantic Zeiser as well as a system controller with integrated ink supply for seamless control of the production and information flow of the attached modules. The camera-based verification system VERICAM™ also guarantees 100 percent quality control of the printing.
