RPC UKSC Plenmeller is supplying a blow moulded HDPE jar with an integral vent for Nestlé’s Nescafé Cappuccino, which has helped the company to minimise packaging materials and streamline logistics while still delivering the product’s frothy benefits to European consumers.
Nescafé Cappuccino retails in Continental Europe in a popular 600ml jar format, but Nestlé was keen to rationalise production and packaging to improve the overall cost and carbon footprint. The previous jar pack incorporated a complex hinged cap featuring wad, induction heat-seal and venting valve.
The company turned to RPC UKSC, a major existing supplier, who have a production site at Plenmeller, Northumberland which is conveniently located 30 miles from Nestlé’s processing and packaging facility in Dalston in Cumbria. RPC Plenmeller was already manufacturing Nestlé’s patented 530ml jar for Aero and Skinny Cow powdered drinks. It was decided that the ideal solution was for RPC to manufacture a 600ml version, which could be filled with Nescafé Cappuccino at Dalston.
A crucial requirement, as with the Aero 530ml design, the 600ml jar needed to release gases which are created by the booster ingredient added to the powdered products. The booster ensures that a pleasant cappuccino frothing effect is produced when hot water is added. Without this venting capability, the jar could deform.
After filling, the jar is capped and decorated with a full-body shrink sleeve that also covers the cap to deliver tamper evidence to the product range.
