INDEPENDENT RELEASE LINER MANUFACTURER ITASA INVESTS FOR THE FUTURE

ITASA (Industrias de Transformación de Andoain), an independent producer of  siliconised release liner in Spain’s Basque country, is investing strongly in more  capacity, optimal manufacturing and finishing quality, and better logistics.

New coater

Following the installation of a custom-built, high-speed 2.3M-wide BMB coater in 2008, the company has just installed its ‘twin’ -- a new BMB 1.65M-width coater,  capable of running at 800 metres per minute, which is now beginning production  trials. This brings ITASA’s coating capacity to four machines, supported by advanced automatic silicone mixing.

Finishing

Complementing the coating capacity are a selection of slitters at 2.3M and 165mm widths, plus a new machine capable of slitting narrow-width rolls down to just 20mm and, since around 20% of ITASA’s production requires a customer logo, two printing machines: one inline, which offers the best cost/performance solution for volume production; and one offline.

Coating capabilities

With ITASA’s current coating capability, high-speed coating of all types of paper release base is possible, from 30gm2 up to 200 gm2 -- krafts, PE coateds, clay coateds, C1S and C2S, with equal or differential release characteristics, to meet the needs of a variety of tape, labelstock, industrial, and composite applications as well as self-adhesive graphic arts (at the highest gram weights) and envelopes and
hygiene (at the lowest gram weights).

Current production capacity is 450 million M2 per annum which, with the commissioning of the new coater, will be closer to 600 million M2. 80% of the company’s production is exported – 50% within Europe, and the balance in the USA, Mexico, and Asia.

New warehousing facility

The company is additionally currently in the process of completing a major extension to their building in Andoain, to create a total of 6,500M2 of dedicated raw material and finished goods storage – an increase of nearly 50%. The project has involved building a special protective retaining wall, since the site is on the side of a hill, as well as a massive underground water tank with associated sprinkler system to meet the requirements of the EU safety regulations. Together with the new machinery, this represents a €20 million investment.

Founded in 1974 by two local families, ITASA has built an admirable reputation as a relevant and reliable supplier in the paper-based release liner market.
