New recognition for packaging professionals

The Packaging Society, a division of IOM3, will be launching the Standard for Packaging Professional Competence (SPPC) at the PPMA Show at the NEC 25-27 Sept. For the first time, this will provide accreditation and recognition of packaging professionals in the UK and beyond.

The SPPC will meet needs across the packaging supply chain to promote packaging as a profession and enhance the status of those working in this vital and complex sector. The Standard will form the basis for a Packaging Professional (PkgProf) designation which will exist alongside the Institute’s Professional Membership, in a similar way to that of Chartered Engineer, Scientist or Environmentalist.

The SPPC is modelled on the internationally recognised UK Engineering Council’s Standard for Professional Engineering Competence. In common with other professional designations, such as Chartered Scientist and Environmentalist, the SPPC scheme will, for the first year from launch, recognise grandparenting rights for those existing members of IOM3 who are packaging-affiliated.

For those who are not currently IOM3 members, the full accreditation process will apply. The SPPC scheme will be managed by the Packaging Board of IOM3 with strategic oversight from a Packaging Accreditation Council (PAC), comprised of senior figures from different parts of the industry.

Although UK based, IOM3 freely offers this designation format to packaging associations in other countries who can use suitable, locally available qualifications and membership associations, especially where these are members of the World Packaging Organisation, with the intention of creating an international network of packaging professionals.
