FLEXcon Europe Secures Scottish Business Award for New Product of the Year

Today, FLEXcon Europe announced it was presented with the award for New Product of the Year at the high profile Scottish Business Awards event, held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC). The event, which featured guest speaker and former US President Bill Clinton, was attended by more than 1,700 businessmen and women representing some of the most influential key decision makers in Scottish Business today. The Scottish Business Awards are the nation’s biggest and most prestigious cross industry business awards programme. Awards are based on the belief that business and entrepreneurship is the primary driving force behind growth and development.

Rising above the competition among seven other finalists, FLEXcon took the honours after convincing the judges its pressure sensitive label material is an integral component in Schreiner MediPharm’s “Needle-Trap” protection system.

In hospitals, outpatient clinics or doctor’s surgeries, just a brief moment of inattentiveness when administering an injection can lead to a healthcare worker sustaining a needlestick injury. The innovative syringe label designed by Schreiner MediPharm has an integrated needle protection function which helps prevent needlestick injuries with prefilled syringes. After the injection, a plastic trap serves to firstly bend, and then secure the blood-contaminated needle. This unique invention which integrates a label with a plastic needle trap is a completely novel solution and is the first time an injection-moulded part has been combined with a label or film.

“Our experts from FLEXcon, together with Schreiner MediPharm, selected the material, surface coating, adhesive and liner according to the requirements of this special application,” said Lee Macnamara, Application Development and Marketing Director for FLEXcon Europe. “With our product we’re offering Schreiner MediPharm a customised solution that is tailored exactly to meet the needs of the application.”

Polyester was chosen firstly for its dimensional stability, optical clarity and chemical resistance, all key properties in selecting a pharmaceutical label. Clear on clear labels are favoured to allow for inspection of the contents of medical vials as well as syringes, and optical clarity is essential to promote the clinical “cleanliness” of the product.
The surface coating FLEXcon provides can be tailored to exactly match the print requirements of the customer. Schreiner requested an optically clear topcoat suitable for conventional printing methods and other marking techniques. With multiple adhesives to choose from, understanding the customer’s application was crucial in making the correct choice. The adhesive had to bond to glass syringes as well as the plastic injection moulded “needle-trap” component. The challenge was to offer the right adhesive to match all substrates at the right coatweight (thickness) to prevent flagging while minimising the risk of ooze.
